Plant Growth

Plant Growth Thumbnail
Have you ever noticed that some plants grow and remain healthy while other plants wither and die? In this investigation, you’ll study what factors are needed to support healthy plant growth. You’ll also see how much of each factor results in the healthiest plants.

What is a plant?

A plant is a type of organism that cannot on its own change its current location and that makes its own food through the process of photosynthesis.

What is a primary producer?

A primary producer is an organism that makes its own food using the process of photosynthesis.

How do plants make food?

Plants use the energy from the sun to change carbon dioxide collected from the atmosphere along with water to make sugar that is the food that provides the energy to plants. Oxygen gas is also made through this process and is released into the air. This overall process is called photosynthesis.

What does the sun provide to plants?

The sun provides the energy needed for the chemical reaction of photosynthesis. The sun also provides the heat that warms the plant.

What is growth?

Growth means for a living organism to increase its physical size or complexity.

What is in air?

The main substances that make up air on Earth are nitrogen gas, oxygen gas, carbon dioxide gas, and water vapor.

What is the function of a plant’s leaves?

The function is the leaves is to intake carbon dioxide and to serve as the site where photosynthesis happens.

What is the function of a plant’s roots?

The main function of the roots is to hold the plant in place and to absorb water and nutrients from the soil. The roots also aid in the uptake of oxygen gas into the plant that the plant needs to undergo respiration.

What is respiration?

Respiration is the process in which food molecules are combined with oxygen gas to provide energy for the plant.

How do plants prevent water loss?

Plants prevent water loss in several ways. These include opening their pores for gas exchange only at night, storing water in their stems, and having a waxy outer layer that reduces water loss.
