Designing a controlled experiment takes attention to detail and an awareness of how to “do science.” In this simulation, you’ll conduct two smaller experiments to practice the techniques for creating your own full-scale experiment. Get started now being a scientific researcher.

What is a connection?

Connections are relationships or associations between two or more variables or concepts.

What is a pulse?

The pulse is a rhythmic expansion of an artery created by the beating of the heart, specifically the opening and closing of the aortic valve in the heart.

What is a resting pulse?

The resting pulse rate is the normal pulse rate of a person who is not experiencing special conditions such as strong emotions or strenuous exercising.

What is a histogram?

A histogram is a type of graph that uses rectangles to show the frequency of data items in successive numerical intervals that are equal in size. Histograms are used to represent continuous data. The height of the rectangle indicates the frequency of that data within that numerical interval.

What is muscle tissue?

Muscle tissue is composed of similar cells that produce movement of the body parts by contracting or shortening. Muscles apply forces to different parts of the body.

What is muscle fatigue?

Muscle fatigue is a decrease in the maximum force that can be created by contraction by muscle tissue. Muscle fatigue can limit the optimum performance of the muscles. A lack of oxygen to the muscle cells and small tears in the muscle tissue resulting in inflammation are the expected causes of muscle fatigue.

What is homeostasis?

Homeostasis is defined as a biological system or organism maintaining a stable condition or state that supports survival even when external or internal conditions are changing.

What is a claim?

A claim is a thought or statement about something that may or may not be correct.

What is evidence?

Evidence is defined as facts, information, observations, or data that supports or contradicts a claim, assumption, or hypothesis.

What is a controlled experiment?

A controlled experiment is a scientific investigation that holds constant all variables except the variable of interest in an experiment to isolate the effects of this variable on one other variable.

What is a variable?

A variable is a quantity, factor, trait, or condition that can exist in differing amounts or types. In a typical experiment three variables are of importance. The independent variable is the variable manipulated by the researcher, the dependent variable is the variable that is measured, and the control variable, which is held constant by the researcher to isolate the effects of the independent variable on the dependent variable.

What is a fair test?

A fair test is another name for a controlled experiment.

What is a hypothesis?

A hypothesis is a testable statement about the relationship between two or more variables that is made based on prior information and/or observations.
