What is energy?

Energy is defined as the ability to do work. Work is the movement of something due to a force on the object.

What are some types of energy?

There are two major types of energy: potential and kinetic energy. Potential energy is energy that is stored due to position of an object or thing. Kinetic energy is energy due to the motion of an object or particle.

What are some forms of energy?

Energy comes in a variety of forms. These include chemical, mechanical, electrical, thermal, and light energy.

What is thermal energy?

Thermal energy is another name for heat energy. Heat is energy that is moved from one object to another object due to a difference in temperature between the two objects. Heat always moves on its own from a higher temperature object to a lower temperature object.

What is energy transfer?

Energy transfer is the movement of energy from one location to another location. The energy form does not change in energy transfer. For example, if heat is moved from one object to a different object, this is an energy transfer.

What is energy transformation?

Energy transformation is the conversion of energy from one form to a different form. For instance, if chemical energy is changed to electrical energy, this would be an energy transformation.

What is a generator?

A generator is a device that changes mechanical energy into electrical energy. A generator transforms energy from one form to a different form.

Here are some definitions to help you in your Grade 3-5 Lesson 1 investigation.

Temperature – how hot or cold something is
Heat – adding energy to something to change the temperature
Energy – the ability to do work
Mechanical Energy – a form of energy due to an object’s motion or location
Electrical Energy – a form of energy due to the motion of electrical charges
Chemical Energy – a form of energy stored in the chemical bonds of a substance
Thermal Energy – a form of energy due to the motion of the particles in an object
Energy Changes – to convert from one form of energy to a different form of energy
Energy Transfer – to move energy from one location to another location

Here are some definitions to help you in your Grade 3-5 Lesson 2 investigation.

Temperature – how hot or cold something is
Heat – adding energy to something to change the temperature, also the movement of thermal energy
Energy – the ability to do work
Electrical Energy – a form of energy due to the motion of electrical charges
Thermal Energy – a form of energy due to the motion of the particles in an object
Energy Changes – to convert from one form of energy to a different form of energy
Filament – the part of a light bulb that makes light
