What is energy?

Energy is defined as the ability to do work. Since work is the force exerted on something and causes the change in motion of that thing, energy is also the ability to exert a force on something and change its motion.

What is light energy?

Light energy is a form of electromagnetic energy. Light energy is the only form of energy that is visible to people using only their eyes.

What is chemical energy?

Chemical energy is energy associated with a chemical reaction. Bonds between atoms store energy and this energy can be released when the bonds are broken and are reformed to form new substances.

What is heat energy?

Heat energy is a type of energy moved from one object to another due to a difference in temperature between the two objects. Heat energy always on its own moves from a higher temperature object to a lower temperature object.

What is electrical energy?

Electrical energy is a type of kinetic energy caused by the movement of electric charges. As with all kinetic energy, the faster the charges move, the greater the amount of electrical energy carried by the charges.

What is a battery?

A battery is a device that stores chemical energy and converts the stored energy to electrical energy.

What is a conductor?

A conductor is a material that easily allows charge pass through the material and offers little resistance to the flow of the charge.

What are electrons?

Electrons are negatively charged particles associated with atoms.

What is a charge?

Matter that is positive or negative is often due to an absence of electrons (positive charge) or an excess of electrons (negative charge). An excess of protons that have a positive charge would also result in positively charged matter.

What is an open electrical circuit?

An open circuit is an electrical circuit that does not have a complete path for charge to follow. Because the path is not complete, the charges are not free to move through the circuit and a light bulb in the circuit would not light up.

What is a closed electrical circuit?

A closed circuit is an electrical circuit that does have a complete path for charge to follow. Because the path is complete, the charges are free to move through the circuit and a light bulb in the circuit would light up.

Here are some definitions to help you in your Grade 3 - 5 Lesson 1 investigation.

Energy – the ability to do work
Convert – to change from one form to another form
Transfer – to move from one location to another location
Battery – a device that stores chemical potential energy
Chemical Energy – energy due to a chemical reaction
Light Energy – a form of electromagnetic energy
Electrons – negatively charged particles in an atom
Open Circuit – when charges are not moving and the light bulb is not lit
Closed Circuit – when charges are moving and the light bulb is lit
Charge – matter that is positive (+) or negative (-)
Criteria – requirements on which something is based or evaluated
Constraints – factors that limit the possible solutions
