What is a chemical formula?

The chemical formula uses symbols to represent the elements present in a compound and numbers to show their relative proportions.

What is a subscript?

Subscripts are numbers located on the bottom right of a chemical symbol as a subscript (dropped-down and smaller size font). The number represents the number of atoms of that element that appear in each molecule of the compound.

What is a reactant?

A reactant is a substance that takes part in a chemical reaction and undergoes changes.

What is a product?

A product is a new substance that exits a chemical reaction.

What is a chemical reaction?

A chemical reaction is a process in which one or more substances are changed to a new substance or substances.

What is the Law of Conservation of Mass?

The Law of Conservation of Mass states that the total mass of the reactants that enter a chemical reaction must be equal to the total mass of the products that exit a chemical reaction.

What is the Law of Conservation of Atoms?

The Law of Conservation of Atoms states that the number and type of atoms that enter a chemical reaction must be equal to the number and types of atoms that exit a chemical reaction.

What is a coefficient?

A coefficient is a number in front of an atom or molecule in a chemical reaction that states how many atoms or molecules are involved in the reaction.

How are chemical equations balanced?

Chemical equations are balanced by using coefficients in front of each atom or molecule associated with a chemical reaction to make sure the number and types of atoms that enter a chemical reaction are equal to the number and types of atoms that exit the reaction. The coefficients in the balanced equation must always be expressed as the simplest whole number ratio.
